Originally from Manitoba, Susie Burpee (Modern) is a graduate of both the Senior Professional Program of Contemporary Dancers and the Theatre and Dance Department of the University of Winnipeg (BA Honours).
Ms Burpee further augmented her studies at the Cunningham and Limon Schools in New York. She was a company member of Ruth Cansfield Dance and Le Groupe Dance Lab and, independently, has worked with Yvonne Coutts, Lesandra Dodson, Sasha Ivanochko, and Tedd Robinson. In 2000 she became a company member of Dancemakers, and has danced in four new creations by artistic director Serge Bennathan, touring across Canada and across the ocean.
Both Dancemakers and Le Groupe Dance Lab have supported Susie’s development as a choreographer, and to date, her work has been presented at the Canada Dance Festival, National Gallery of Canada, Dusk Dances, and Harbourfront Centre. Her most recent creation, Mischance and Fair Fortune, received Dora Mavor Moore Awards for Outstanding New Choreography and Outstanding Performance. Recent projects include studying with master clown teacher Philippe Gaulier and creating a new duet with award-winning pianist Sageev Oore. In November, she will be a part of the Pick Seven Series in Toronto, pairing artists of different disciplines for dialogue and creation. Susie regularly teaches contemporary dance at Dancemakers, 509 Collective, Canadian Children’s Dance Theatre, and Pia Bouman School for Ballet and Creative Movement. She is a member of The Canadian Alliance of Dance Artists and board member of the Dance Umbrella of Ontario.
