Michael Caldwell is a Dora-nominated, Toronto-based choreographer and performer. An “intense dynamo on stage” (Scene4) with “exceptional interpretive skills” (The Globe and Mail), Caldwell has collaborated with many of Canada’s esteemed dance creators and companies including Peggy Baker, Sylvie Bouchard, Danny Grossman, Guillaume Côté, Maxine Heppner, Sasha Ivanochko, James Kudelka, Louis Laberge-Côté, Tedd Robinson, William Yong, Anandam Dance Theatre, Coleman Lemieux & Compagnie, Corpus Dance Projects, Dusk Dances, Kaeja d’Dance, Kaha:wi Dance Theatre and Signal Theatre, and has performed across North America, Europe, Asia, and Australia. Caldwell quickly garnered critical acclaim for his “daring and powerful” (Bateman Reviews) choreography. His work has been presented at the dance: made in canada/fait au canada festival, Dusk Dances, the CanAsian Dance Festival, Dance Matters, Series 8:08 (resident artist), Porch View Dances and the Toronto Fringe Festival. He is working on a large-scale group work examining subtle communication within a world of loneliness and isolation. With a bachelor’s degree in film and art history from Syracuse University, Caldwell sits on the board of directors at The School of Toronto Dance Theatre and at the Canadian Alliance of Dance Artists – Ontario Chapter, and is artistic producer for the Fall for Dance North Festival.
