“Stylized to the minimum gesture”, Montreal choreographer Lina Cruz developed her career as a dancer in Spain, other European countries and the United States. She came to Montreal in 1989. She has presented her work at local, national and international levels. Her work has received Dora Awards nominations in several categories along the years. She received the Dora Mavor Moore Award for Outstanding Original Choreography in 2017 for her piece Ylem and in 2012 for Soupe du Jour. Her longtime collaborator, composer Philippe Noireaut, received a nomination in 2017 for the music of Ylem and a Dora award in 2012 for the music of Soupe du Jour. In 2016, Fabien Piché received the Dora Award for his performance in Waiting for a Sleepless Night, a work by Lina Cruz, for which she was also nominated for the choreography. In 1998, her solo Illustration 7 received second place award in the international choreographic competition of the St-Sauveur Arts Festival (Quebec). She founded her company, Fila 13 Productions, in 2003.
Cruz has created works for Toronto Dance Theatre and for independent artists as well as for schools of professional dance training, like École de danse de Québec and École de danse contemporaine de Montréal. Her 2016/2017 season included creating for Cloud 9/Moonhorse Dance Theatre (Claudia Moore, Karen Kaeja and Louise Bédard), Throwdown Collective, XYZ Collective and Harold Rhéaume/Lydia Wagerer. Her 2017 creations premiered in Toronto at Harbourfront Centre/DanceWorks in February 2017, in Montreal at Agora de la danse in March 2017 and in Québec City at Maison pour la danse in October 2017.
